Dr. Alexandros A. Serafetinides (Professor, N.T.U.A. – Physics Department) has received his Diploma in Physics from the University of Athens, Greece (1973), the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Optoelectronics and Lasers from the Physics Department of the University of Essex, U.K. (1974 and 1978, respectively) and has attended 16 short-duration training courses on lasers, electro-optics and lasers applications between 1980 and 2000. He has more than 35 years experience in laser development, laser applications and optoelectronics. His specific interests include pulsed atomic and molecular gas lasers, rare gas halide excimer lasers, solid state lasers, detections systems, semiconductor studies, waveguides and fibers, lasers applications in biophysics and medicine, rangefinding and pollution monitoring, industrial applications of lasers, radiation pressure effects, optical trapping and laser treatment and evaluation of cultural heritage objects. In the last 20 years he has been involved in ablation and L.I.F. studies of biological materials, in waveguides and fibers studies for medical applications and on studies of cultural heritage metal objects. He has published more than 75 scientific papers in international refereed journals, more than 180 articles in international conference proceedings, 7 articles in national refereed journals, 66 articles in national conferences, he is the author or co-author of 12 books and editor of 4 Conference Proceedings, in the field of optoelectronics and lasers. He has participated in 25 international research projects (Eurolaser, Human Capital, Bilateral Agreements etc.) between 1978 and 2011 and in 25 national research projects in the same period. He has been the Greek National Representative in the Panel IV- Infrared and Optics, in the Eurolaser and in the BRITE-EURAM Projects. He has been also the member of the scientific board of 14 international conferences and 8 national ones. In 2007 he received “the badge of honour for special merit to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences”. Currently he is the President of the School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences – N.T.U.A. and Member of the N.T.U.A.’s Senate.
